Member Spotlight - Julie

1. Name: Julie Tomlinson

2. Age: 38

3. Occupation: Expat wife/mom (engineer on hiatus)

4. How long have you been at CrossFit 399?

Just over a year.

5. What do you enjoy doing outside of CrossFit?

Traveling around SE Asia, teaching math at a local refugee school, keeping up with my son Colin (17 months old).

{bonus} Why do you do CrossFit?

You know, being a new mom is really tough. Beyond the expected sleeplessness, worries about parenting, changing body, and unbalanced hormones, I felt like I lost a bit of my self-identity those first few months. Going to CrossFit just two or three times a week was something I could do just for me -- a little bit of time to focus on myself and my needs.

Now, I keep doing CrossFit because it's an outlet for my competitiveness - there aren't too many opportunities as an adult to be on a sports team like in school. At CrossFit, I continuously push myself to beat my own scores or strength PRs. And in the group classes, I have coaches and other members cheering me on!

6. What is your favourite and least favourite movements or WODs?

I like front and back squats, rowing, and wall balls... I hate burpees and running in the heat of Malaysia!

7. What is your biggest achievement so far?

When I first started, I feel like we were practicing snatches 2 out of 3 classes that I went to. I was so frustrated because it's such a technical movement and I couldn't get my form right (knees back, chest up, etc. etc.). I was so proud of myself when I could consistently do the bar and plates (55lb) without falling over, keeping good form!

8. What are your future goals?

I really want to get a strict pull-up before I leave. And RX more WODs!

9. Any advice for anyone just starting their CrossFit journey?

Just start! In the beginning I was scaling everything and had zero cardio stamina. As you track your progress, you'll see huge strides immediately.

10. Tell us something we don't know about you.

Saya boleh cakap Bahasa Malaysia sikit. Saya suka teh tarik dan roti canai!

11. Who's your box buddy?

Monet! She's a fellow mom and expat to KL, so we have a lot in common. We keep each other accountable. Plus, Dave and Hugh in my 10am class keep things fun!
